Dear Friends and Advocates,
Meet Fakihat Omar Abubakar,
a determined 23-year-old woman with multiple disabilities, particularly dystonia.
In 2020, Fakihat completed her Information Technology certificate at VTA
College and embarked on a transformative journey with JUWAUZA, a leading
organization for women and girls with disabilities in Zanzibar.
Before her involvement with JUWAUZA, Fakihat faced challenges. She had limited awareness of disability rights and movements, and battled with feelings of low self-esteem and abandonment. However, her decision to volunteer as an assistance officer at JUWAUZA marked a turning point.
During her first year at JUWAUZA, Fakihat courageously ran for a leadership position in internal elections, an experience that significantly bolstered her confidence and self-perception. Despite not clinching the role, she emerged stronger and more determined than ever.
Subsequently, Fakihat was appointed as the coordinator of women with disabilities platforms in Zanzibar, supported by ADD International. Her focus shifted towards advocating for justice in the court system and creating accessible environments for people with disabilities.
Fakihat's journey of empowerment didn't stop there. She underwent comprehensive training in women's empowerment, gender equality, reproductive health leadership, and advocacy campaigns. Her unwavering commitment and tireless efforts have not gone unnoticed, she has been nominated for numerous awards, recognizing her dedication to empowering women and girls with disabilities and championing their rights.
Driven by a profound sense of purpose, Fakihat is deeply committed to nurturing the potential of girls and youth with disabilities. Her mission is to foster self-acceptance, cultivate leadership skills, and inspire the next generation of activists.
Fakihat attributes much of her personal and professional growth to the invaluable support, opportunities, and mentorship provided by JUWAUZA. Her dedication has been duly recognized, she is the proud recipient of prestigious awards such as the Women in Islam Women with Disability Change Makers Award and the Zanzibar Youth Award in the Ability category.
JUWAUZA's dedication to empowering women and girls with disabilities is unmatched. They provide invaluable resources and support, helping us navigate challenges and achieve our goals. Today, I'm thriving, all thanks to JUWAUZA's dedication to empowering women and girls like me.
JUWAUZA isn't just an organization, It's a beacon of hope for women and girls with disabilities everywhere. Their tireless efforts to raise awareness and break down barriers have inspired me to never give up on my dreams. Thanks to JUWAUZA, I now believe that anything is possible, regardless of my disability. They've given me the strength and courage to embrace my identity and live life on my own terms.
Where I came from is far away and I still have a long way to go in convincing the community to agree that people with disabilities can participate in decision making bodies. Thank you so much JUWAUZA for raising me and giving me leadership training and I have finally been able to be a member of House of Representatives for over 5 years now.
JUWAUZA was able to help children with disability raised in Upendo Center by paying their school fees and buying them uniforms, also JUWAUZA helped their guardians to find the information to access for the disabled. JUWAUZA was prompt in providing services with a lot of respect and navigating our accessible finances to help us out. I would rate as Excellent.
JUWAUZA has been an absolute lifeline for me. As a woman with a disability, I often felt invisible and overlooked by society. But through their advocacy and leadership training and workshops, I've found my voice and regained my confidence. Today, I stand tall, knowing that I have a supportive community behind me, thanks to JUWAUZA, I have made great changes in my community at Tumbatu
All human beings are equal and should not be discriminated against the basis on the basis of disability. Despite the fact that I am a person with Disability but JUWAUZA that was not a barrier. for them to Deploy me as an Observer in the 2020 election. JUWAUZA deployed me and I was able to do my job very effectively. Thank you so much JUWAUZA.
